The Washington Post quoted people familiar with the matter on Thursday evening and reported that US health officials are reviewing reports that Moderna Inc’s Covid-19 vaccine may be associated with a higher risk of rare heart disease in young people than previously thought.
According to the paper, the focus of the review is Canadian data, which shows that the risk of vaccination is higher than that of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, especially in men under 30.
The Washington Post quoted a source as saying that it is too early for the regulator to reach a conclusion and that additional work is needed before any recommendations are made.
“Although we will not comment on internal meetings or discussions, we can say that the FDA is absolutely committed to reviewing the data we can obtain,” the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said. Moderna did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
In June, health regulators added a warning to the literature that accompanies the mRNA vaccine produced by Moderna and Pfizer to mark the rare risk of heart inflammation that is mainly seen in young men.
Data from the safety monitoring system of government agencies that month showed that there were 12.6 cases of heart inflammation per million people between 12 and 39 years old.
