Petition for the recall and removal of the governor of Florida Ron DeSantis As the Sunshine State battled the highest daily COVID-19 case on record, it doubled its approval rating in 6 days and accumulated more than 70,000 signatures.
On August 16, as Delta variants surged across the state, Florida recorded 56,036 new COVID-19 cases.
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between August 8 and August 14, the state had an average of 13,703 hospitalizations every day, an increase of 13% from the previous 7 days.
The virus is also rising among young people, and Florida has one of the highest rates of children infected with COVID-19 in the country. According to data from the Covkid project, which monitors children’s viruses, the incidence in Florida is 10,098 cases per 100,000 children.
DeSantis came under fire for not imposing stricter restrictions to contain the virus. This includes prohibiting schools from enforcing mask regulations.
The petition to remove him initiated by Cameron White had 70,526 signatures by Saturday morning. It criticized the Republican governor’s stance on COVID-19 and DeSantis for making it difficult to apply for unemployment benefits.
“Governor Ron DeSantis and former Governor Rick Scott made jobless applications in Florida impossible. They are more concerned with showing low unemployment than whether Floridans have enough food,” The petition was written.
“In addition to this sad fact, DeSantis waited until the last minute to issue a stay-at-home order, which undoubtedly led to the spread of the coronavirus much faster than necessary. The governor also directly opposed CDC Guidelines and allow the church to still hold large gatherings. He is not suitable to serve as our governor and needs to be removed as soon as the constitution permits. “
In an update on the petition on August 14, White wrote: “The Delta variant is raging in Florida, and our governor still puts the lives of Floridians at risk and refuses to follow medical instructions. Responsible citizens of Florida We must stand up and do everything. We now have the right to remove the reckless and incompetent governor.”
