Chinese streaming sites cancel idol performances due to industry suppression

“We resisted unreasonable wages, unhealthy industry trends, tax evasion, and cancelled the idol voting plan for the next few years.”

Talent shows that allow hundreds of aspiring young performers to participate in a rigorous boot camp and subject them to public votes are very popular in China, and in some respects have caused strong opposition.

Their agency said that a Chinese boy group composed of elementary school students disbanded shortly after their debut last Friday because their age caused an uproar.

Regulations issued by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Radio, Film and Television in May require program producers to promote “socialist core values.”

Earlier this month, actor and singer Wu was arrested on suspicion of rape, which prompted China’s leading performing arts association to call on entertainers to show good morals.

The Chinese film industry was also targeted in 2018 against suspected tax evasion and inflated salaries of some celebrities.
