U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland Efforts are stepping up to protect those seeking abortion and other reproductive health services because Texas has implemented the nation’s strictest anti-abortion rights law, which basically reports abortions that occur six weeks later on behalf of citizens.
“When abortion clinics or reproductive health centers are attacked, the department will provide support from federal law enforcement,” Garland said in a statement on Monday. “We will not tolerate violent acts, physical disabilities, or property damage against people seeking or providing reproductive health services. These acts violate [Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act of 1994] Face bill. “
Garland said he has contacted the U.S. Attorney’s Office and FBI Field offices in Texas and across the country discuss the enforcement of the FACE Act, as more and more states see Texas law as a model for restricting abortion access.
With a 5-4 vote last week, the United States Supreme Court Allow the new Texas law to take effect. It prohibits providers from terminating a pregnancy after detecting a fetal heartbeat-approximately six weeks from conception. Opponents believe that many women do not know that they are pregnant in the early stages of pregnancy, so the law is too onerous.
The court has left room for further debate, allowing the law to take effect last week, while continuing to challenge specific details in the court.
The FACE Act, also known as the Access Act, allows people to protest peacefully outside abortion clinics, but adds federal criminal penalties, provisions for people who physically block entry, threats of violence, or stalking clinic staff.
Texas law paved the way for “private litigation rights”-essentially civil penalties rather than criminal penalties-for health care providers who perform abortions outside of restricted hours. Ordinary citizens can file a lawsuit for compensation of $10,000 or more against anyone else who helps promote illegal abortions.
The Texas Life Rights organization, an anti-abortion rights organization that supports the law, has launched a website that encourages people to report anyone who violates the new six-week rule.
President Joe BidenCatholic Democrats vowed to oppose Texas law at the federal level.
Biden said in a statement last week: “This extreme Texas law flagrantly violates the constitutional rights established in Roe v. Wade and is regarded as a precedent for nearly half a century.” “Texas laws will severely impair women’s access to the health care services they need, especially for communities of color and low-income individuals.”
Garland said in his statement that the Justice Department is still exploring other ways to challenge the law, but would like to emphasize the protection provided by the FACE Act.
“The FACE Act prohibits the use or threat of use of force and physical barriers to harm, intimidate, or interfere with people seeking to obtain or provide reproductive health services. It also prohibits intentional damage to facilities that provide reproductive health services,” he said. “Since the bill was signed into law in 1994, the department has been obtaining criminal and civil remedies for violations of the FACE Act, and it will continue to do so now.”
