Michigan officials demanded on Wednesday that lawyers who failed to successfully prosecute the overthrow of former President Donald Trump’s failed election in the state should pay approximately $200,000 to reimburse attorneys’ fees and related expenses.
U.S. District Judge Linda Parker ruled in August that state and local election officials in Michigan are entitled to reimbursement of legal fees, but the exact amount has not been determined.
The judge will now review the $200,000 application to determine whether it is reasonable.
Most of the $200,000 was requested by the City of Detroit, which spent approximately $180,000 on a private law firm in this case. The office of Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel asked for approximately $20,000.
As part of the sanctions imposed on lawyers including former Trump campaign lawyer Sidney Powell and prominent litigation lawyer Lin Wood, Parker ordered the repayment.
Trump’s lawyers filed a lawsuit in Michigan in 2020 to overthrow Democratic President Joe Biden’s victory over Trump in the election. Parker suggested that they should probably lose their legal license.
In his August 25 ruling, Parker stated that before filing what Parker called a “rash” lawsuit, lawyers supporting Trump should more carefully investigate the former Republican president’s voter fraud allegations.
Parker dismissed the Michigan lawsuit in December and formally asked the disciplinary agency to investigate whether pro-Trump lawyers should revoke their legal licenses.
The judge also ordered the lawyer to attend a course on the ethics and legal requirements for making legal claims.
“This lawsuit represents a historic and profound abuse of the judicial process,” Parker said in her decision, adding that the case was “never about fraud – it was about undermining the people’s confidence in our democracy. And belittle the judicial process to do so”.
