A fire broke out in a hospital in India.
Officials said Saturday’s fire destroyed a hospital in western India and killed at least 11 coronavirus patients.
This fire is the latest in epidemic wards across India.
Officials said that when the fire broke out, there were about two dozen patients in the intensive care unit of the Ahmad Nagar District Hospital in Maharashtra. Most of the dead are over 60 years old.
The scorched ward was newly built for coronavirus patients.
The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Udaf Thackeray, ordered a formal investigation of the fire and safety conditions in a hospital 250 kilometers (185 miles) from the regional capital of Mumbai.
Due to the coronavirus surge from April to May, India’s underfunded public health system was pushed to the brink of collapse. However, many Covid-19 hospitals have been hit by fire tragedies.
In May, a fire broke out in a hospital in Gujarat, killing at least 16 Covid-19 patients and two nurses. The police investigation blamed the short-circuit in the intensive care unit of the hospital.
In April, at least 13 Covid-19 patients were killed in a clinic in Mumbai, and just a few days ago, a fire broke out in another hospital in the city, killing 22 people.
