Want to learn about Bing and search rankings? here you go!

Many people remain silent about Bing’s SEO because there is not much information about it. Interestingly, before Google, Bing used many cutting-edge technologies and techniques. Fabrice Canel, Bing’s chief project manager, recently shared a lot of information about how Bing works and how the search engine works in general with Jason Barnard of Kalicube.

Index content standards

Fabrice is responsible for Bingbot Crawler, URL discovery and selection, document processing and Bing webmaster tools. He is a good person who can seek information about search engines, especially crawling and page selection.

Fabrice described the crawling process here. I think the important point is that he said that Bing is very picky about what it chooses to index.

Many people think that every page of their website should have a chance to rank. But neither Google nor Bing will index everything.

They tend to leave certain types of pages.

The first characteristic of pages that Bing wants to index is useful pages.

Fabrice Canel explained:

“We are obviously business-oriented to satisfy our end customers, but we have to choose.

We cannot crawl all the content on the Internet, there are countless URLs.

You have a page with a calendar. You can go to the next day forever.

So this is actually about detecting what is most useful for satisfying Microsoft Bing customers. “

Bing and key domains

Fabrice next talked about the concept of key domains and how they are guided by key pages on the Internet to show them high-quality content.

this kind of It sounds like an algorithm that contains a seed set of trusted sites. The farther the site is from the key site, the more likely it is to become a spam or useless site (Link distance sorting algorithms)

I don’t want to put words into Fabris’s mouth, the above is just my observation.

I will let Fabris speak for himself.

Jason asked:

“Are you saying that most of the content on the Internet is useless or is it an exaggeration?”

Fabris replied:

“I think this is a bit exaggerated.

We use the important key pages on the Internet as a guide and follow the links to understand the next step.

If we really focus on these key areas (key pages), then this will lead us to high-quality content.

Therefore, our view of the Internet is not to go deep and crawl useless content forever.

Obviously, the index must be kept fresh and comprehensive, containing all the most relevant content on the web. “

What makes Bing go deep into the website

Jason next asked those websites that were deeply crawled. Obviously, it is very important for search engines to index all pages of the site.

Fabris explained the process.

Jason asked:

“Yes. Then I think this is the key. You prefer to go farther and deeper.

So if I have a top-ranked website, you will tend to pay more attention to me instead of trying to find new things that you don’t know yet? “

Fabrice provides a nuanced answer that reflects the complexity of the content selected for crawling and indexing:

“It depends. If you have a dedicated website that covers interesting topics that customers care about, then we can obviously go deeper.”

What machine chooses to grab

We sometimes say “Search engines do not like my website.

But in fact, there is nothing about likes or trusts in the algorithm.

Machine not like.

Machine not Believe.

Search engines are essentially machines with goals.

Fabrice explains how Bing chooses to climb or not to climb:

“This is not where I choose where we go deep rather than where we go deep. Nor is it my team.

This is the machine.

Machine learning chooses deeper or deeper based on what we think is important to Bing customers. “

The part about what is important to the customer needs attention. The search engine (Bing in this case) is adjusted to identify pages that are important to customers.

When writing an article or even creating an e-commerce page, it may be useful to look at the page and ask “How can I make this page important to people who visit this page?”

Jason asked a question to get more information about the content involved in choosing content that is important to website visitors.

Jason asked:

“You just give the machine what you want it to achieve?”

Fabris responded:

“Absolutely. Yes.

The main input we provide to machine learning algorithms is to make Bing customers happy.

Therefore, we focus on various dimensions to satisfy Bing customers.

Similarly, if you query Facebook. You want the Facebook link to be at the top. You don’t want some random bloggers to talk about Facebook. “

The search crawl is broken and needs to be updated

Jason asked Fabrice why IndexNow is helpful.

Fabrice responded that what is crawling today and this method of finding indexed content has been around for nearly 30 years, and now it needs to be updated.

The old and current way of crawling is to visit websites and “pull“Data from the website, even if the page is the same and has not changed.

Search engines must constantly visit the entire index page to check whether any new pages, sentences, or links have been added.

Fabrice asserts that the way search engines crawl websites needs to change because there are better ways to deal with it.

He explained the fundamental problem:

“So, the crawl model is actually for learning, trying to find out when things change.

When will Jason post again? We might be able to model it. We might be able to try to figure it out. But we really don’t know.

So what we are doing is we are pulling, pulling, climbing, climbing, to see if there is any change.

This is the crawling model today. We may learn from the link, but at the end of the day, we will go to the homepage and figure it out. So this model needs to be changed. “

Fabrice next explained the solution:

“We need to get input from the website owner Jason. Jason can tell us that the content of the website has changed through a simple API to help us discover this change-understand the changes, send crawlers and get the latest content.

This is the transformation of the entire industry, from crawling, crawling, crawling and crawling to discovering whether something has changed…”

The current state of search

Google tends to call them users, people who use their website. Bing introduces the concept of a person who is a customer search, and all the small maxims about customers that are implicit in the customer first approach, such as customers are always right and give customers what they want.

Steve Jobs talked about innovation-related customers, which is related to Bing’s IndexNow and publishers:

“You can’t just ask customers what they want and try to give them. When you build it, they will want something new.”

The future of search is push?

Bing launched a new push technology called IndexNow. This is a way for publishers to notify search engines to crawl new or updated pages. This saves hosting and data center resources in the form of power and bandwidth. It also makes it easier for publishers to know that search engines will use push methods to get content faster, rather than being late like current crawling methods.
