Trust organizations around the world have called for a ban on the use of peat in composting as part of efforts to combat the effects of climate change.
The National Trust said that healthy peatlands act as carbon sinks, capturing carbon to help mitigate the effects of climate change, help control floods and encourage vegetation that can provide homes for wildlife.
Organizations from 19 countries-including Scotland Ireland Germany with Indonesia – It also called on its accumulated 8 million members to stop buying products that rely on peat and instead seek sustainable alternatives.
Hilary McGrady, Director General of the National Trust, said: “We are all taking action in our organization to eliminate the use of peat in our gardens and in our supply chain-but we cannot end this practice alone.
“So today, I joined many international national trust organizations, calling on our members to make positive choices for climate and nature when shopping in the garden center, and to purchase peat-free compost for use in their gardens, and to check what they planted. Whether the plant is buying peat-free.
“It is through this collective effort that we can unite to tackle climate change.
“We still need government Strengthen and play its role through legislation prohibiting the sale of products containing peat. “
