On November 7, 2021, a dead whale ran aground in Port Calais in northern France.
French animal experts said on Sunday that they are preparing to conduct an autopsy on a 19-meter-long whale that died after being stranded in the northern port of Calais.
This fin whale weighs about 15 tons and apparently ran aground on its own after being injured, which is a rare phenomenon in this area.
Jacky Karpouzopoulos of CMNF Animal Protection told AFP: “This is a woman of about 30 years old who was stranded on Saturday.”
“She was sick, but she arrived at Calais alive, and then she got too close to the rock and stranded.”
Karpouzopoulos said the whale will be dragged to a place where an autopsy can be performed on Tuesday.
The fin whale is the second largest mammal in the world after the blue whale, and is listed as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Several species of whales inhabit the waters around France.
Earlier this year, a humpback whale was spotted on a beach in the southern Mediterranean of France.
