The Guinness World Records announced on Wednesday that Mexico City has set a world record for free Wi-Fi access with thousands of public Internet access points all over the capital.
Official judge Carlos Tapia awarded Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum the award for the most hotspots (21,500) in a single free city Wi-Fi network.
Access points are distributed in huge cities with a population of approximately 9 million, especially in public transportation, although sometimes the network becomes saturated.
When schools were closed for more than a year during the Covid-19 pandemic, some students turned to the service for online courses.
Sheinbaum said the purpose is to give everyone access to the Internet, especially vulnerable families who cannot connect at home.
