According to local officials, the bodies of 10 people were found in the central Mexican state of Zacatecas on Thursday. 9 of them were hanging from a bridge, apparently related to gangs.

According to an official of the Ministry of Public Security who asked not to be named, the tenth body was found on a nearby highway. The state government said in a statement that the body was found in the Cuauhtemoc city area.

The official said the killings were probably related to disputes between criminal groups operating in the area. The local government stated that it is conducting an “in-depth investigation.”

Gang-related violence has recently intensified in parts of Mexico, including in the popular tourist area of Quintana Roo.

President Andres Manuel López Obrador said on Wednesday that the National Guard will be permanently deployed to Cancun and surrounding areas after increased violence, including two tourists in Tulu Mu Resort was killed and they were involved in a gang exchange.

According to the government, as of September, 21,495 people have died from gang-related violence this year, an average of nearly 2,400 per month.
