2021 roundup and TMBA news

our 2021 retrospective episodes I went live today.

I want to say a few words for those who follow the newsletter and our blog.

For me, the theme of 2021 is “Back to Basics”. Personal (for example, receiving treatment) and professional (establishing high-quality work procedures and improving the team).

There are no tips, tricks or life tricks that can build a sustained multi-million dollar business for you.

As my business mentor often tells me:

“[To grow a successful business] All you have to do is work hard, work smart, and don’t spend money. “

So in early 2021, this is more or less what we plan to do.

This is what happened.

Explosive work

Although 2021 is the year of “returning to basics”, 2020 is the year of “returning to the roots”What are we going to do.

Back in 2019, we ushered in the best face-to-face event ever. Our members have collaborated with us to create a monthly event calendar that brings us together in cities around the world.

Our October event, DCBKK, is the most attended event in our history.

Then, well, COVID.

In March 2020, we refunded all ticket holders for the Austin event and sat watching our damn hands.

The future of a group of entrepreneurs—although their business is 100% independent of location—is absolutely dependent on face-to-face gatherings to thrive.

We should use the time away from the incident to devote our energy to Dynamite Jobs. This is not obvious, this is just a side project.

Although the employment space is obviously huge, there are also many opportunities, Dynamite Jobs’ revenue in 2019 is only $5,300.

When it became clear that the event would not return soon (mid-2020), we decided to see what we could do.

Our first step was to hire a CTO-our old friend Simon Payne, who was the co-founder of Leadpages and other startups. In early January, we hired a senior recruiter, Greg Valentine.

We started the daily stand-up. Weekly team calls. Target. A fruitful debate. Sales call. We have established a development and recruitment team.

you know. Base.

So far it has worked.

This year Dynamite Jobs has nearly 2.5 million visitors. Job seekers have created more than 40,000 user profiles. While cooperating with more and more customers, we have generated more than $500,000 in revenue.

After a year of hard work, what you can do is really amazing.

We also made many mistakes.

We have built some features that are different from what we expected.

The good news is that we are learning. Especially from our customers and users. Unlike 2019, we have many.

We can do this more effectively in the last year, because in the fourth quarter, we completely moved from WordPress to a custom platform built by ourselves.

It really feels like a new company.

There is a lot to do in 2022.

Target:

  • 4 times the income.
  • 4 times the flow rate.
  • Build great software that our users love.
  • Build a great damn recruitment platform.

Explosive ring

I did not expect our membership to grow in the past few years because our schedule of events is not as strong as in the past. But members continue to recommend their friends, and the DC Forum is still a place where like-minded entrepreneurs can connect and build meaningful relationships.

My highlight of the year was to reconnect with our members at the first official Mexico City event in October.

Since our own business revenue has decreased by 50% in 2020-due to the closure of activities-I have a feeling that perhaps many members’ businesses have also been hit hard and look forward to sympathizing with each other in the corridor. On the contrary, I spent most of the event listening to how many members have had their best business career ever. Surrounding this kind of success and business agility is incredibly motivating.

As always: make deals, share information, build relationships. It’s great to be back with so many talented people in two years.

In 2022, We are finalizing an exciting schedule of events And continue to focus on what makes DC great—building planners, hosting events, and promoting like-minded relationships.

We also increased our expenses for the first time in more than five years (January 1). If you have been considering joining this group for a while, This is a good time to enter at the speed of a grandfather.

Tropical MBA Podcast

One of my long-term goals for podcasting has always been to make more money from advertising for our own business, not to sell advertising space to a third party.

Not strict Yes, but at least in a sense, selling ads on your show acknowledges that other companies can monetize viewers more effectively than us.

Maybe I was attracted to this option because I was bored with selling ads from the beginning. We argued for a while. The problem is only financial reality-our production costs continue to rise, and we feel that it is irresponsible to continue to use other business income to pay the bills. Ian specifically pointed out that it is time to look for advertising partners.

What i didn’t expect is Audience actually like New adNot only did the vast majority of listeners view the websites and products of our advertising partners, but they were also happy to hear that the company was willing to spend money to contact them through their favorite niche podcasts (or this is more or less my written feedback Generalized approach).

We also only work with products that we think are cool, which will help.

But in the second quarter of 2021, it became clear that advertising for our own DJ recruitment service was very effective, and we considered abandoning third-party advertising altogether.

Before we refunded the deposit, we contacted our partners and told them that we plan to run Dynamite Jobs Recruiting ads (and related products) in each episode. If they want, they can keep their place, they just need to “share” with us.

No one blinked. Very cool!

Actually, 2021 is the “easiest” advertising sales year we have ever seen. Everything is inbound (listeners just via email [email protected], Our producer) and the creative/production process is almost on track. We have sold out more than a quarter in advance throughout the year, which makes me think we should consider creating more advertising inventory in some way.

I know that marketing departments are obsessed with trying to attribute results to their marketing expenditures-we sometimes adapt to this by sending listeners to landing pages with discounts, etc. But the most important thing is—even if podcast listeners don’t give up their workouts to take advantage of discounts as early as possible—podcast advertising for niche audiences works very well, especially for companies with relatively high annual contract values.

I do think that COVID has also had a potential impact on the convenience of advertising sales in 2021.

If you want to learn more about the past catalog, here are our most popular episodes of 2021:

In 2022, our goal is to get more original works and ideas on Pod. This is basically a time management problem-interviews take up a lot of my personal energy, so the goal for 2022 is to increase the efficiency of this time (bundling them into a few days of each month) so that we can have A few days are dedicated to creating new podcast content.

personal

Other than that, this is just another Thursday in TMBA land. We will plan the new year in the next few days and spend time with friends and family.

I usually spend this time writing a lot about what happened and what I want to accomplish in the new year. I will also ensure that my personal financial situation is explained, simplified and fully processed in one document.

Based on the advice I received from many DC members, I will re-adjust my portfolio, paying special attention to the opportunities in Crypto. In the new year, we will continue to discuss this topic a lot.

If entrepreneurship on the Internet is financial freedom outside of professional and location contexts (focusing on “multi-currency”), then Encryption is financial freedom outside of banks and sovereigntyI believe that money technology will become the foundation of lifestyle business movements, just like WordPress and email. More relevant information will be provided in 2022.

Now, I just want to thank you for your attention to our work. We want you to spend a peaceful holiday and hope to help you start working with enthusiasm and energy in 2022.

Sincerely,

Dan Andrews
