A Classic Champagne Mixed Drink for New Years Eve

This citrusy cocktail is for everyone who enjoys sipping on a strong drink that doesn’t taste overpoweringly of alcohol. It’s boozy, it’s bubbly, and it tastes like a glass of fresh-squeezed lemonade! Garnished with an optional lemon twist, it’s definitely a worthy beverage to close out your year with.

That being said, it’s also quick and easy enough for whenever you’re in the mood to have a mixed drink. You just need a cocktail shaker and some ice cubes to bring it to life. And if you want to put your own little spin on the recipe, the possibilities are infinite!

Why is the Cocktail Called French 75?

This fizzy gin cocktail is named after a French gun used during the first World War. The firearm, a 75mm Howitzer field gun, was known to be very fast and accurate. The idea is that this drink “hits” you in a similar manner. In other words, it certainly doesn’t stint on the alcohol!

How to Make a French 75 Cocktail

You don’t need any experience mixing drinks to whip up a French 75. This single-serving recipe is super easy to manage.

Make Simple Syrup: Add the sugar and water to a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a simmer and dissolve the sugar in the water. Then remove the syrup from the heat and place it in the refrigerator until it cools.

Combine Lemon Juice, Syrup, Gin & Ice: Add the lemon juice, simple syrup, gin and a few ice cubes to a cocktail shaker. Put the top on and shake vigorously until the outside of the cocktail shaker frosts up.

Add Champagne: Strain the mixture into a champagne flute or a champagne coupe. Pour 2 ounces of champagne over the top of the drink.
