ingredients you need
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for this keto brownie in a mug recipe, what each ingredient does, and substitution options. See recipe card below for measurements.
- ChocZero Unsweetened Dark Chocolate Chips – Essential for any chocolate keto! They taste like real chocolate without any added sugar. We added some to the brownie batter to make it richer and left some for the toppings. ChocZero also has milk or white chocolate chips for you if you want to mix it up!
- Wholesome Yum Almond Flour – The fine grinding of this flour makes every bite taste like authentic brownies. If you need a nut free option, you could try substituting 1 to 1 1/2 tsp coconut flour for the 1 1/2 tbsp almond flour (this is a good estimate for conversion), but I haven’t tried to confirm it is it effective.
- Besti Monk Fruit Allulose Blend – This sweetener dissolves perfectly in brownie batters and locks in moisture, all with 0 grams of net carbs. Brownies will be drier with erythritol-based sweeteners like Swerve or Lakanto, so I don’t usually recommend these for brownies.
- butter -I used grass-fed butter for flavor and goodness, but any unsalted butter will work here. You can also use coconut oil as a vegan, dairy-free alternative.
- Unsweetened Almond Milk – Make sure it’s at room temperature. You can use the store bought version or make your own Homemade Almond Milk. other Keto Milk Options, including nut-free ones such as hemp milk Or a coconut milk drink, too.
- vanilla extract – Use a high-quality variety if you can – you’ll taste the difference.
- cocoa powder – This adds a deeper chocolate flavor than the chocolate chips alone, but the chocolate chips add richness, which is why we use both. I recommend Dutch processed cocoa powder.
- sea salt – Balance the sweetness of chocolate and sweeteners with just one tap.

How to Make Mug Brownies (The Healthy Way!)
This section describes how to make keto brownie cupcakes with step-by-step photos and details on the technique. See the recipe card below for full instructions.
- Prepare wet ingredients. In a microwave-safe cup or ramekin, melt butter. Add almond milk and vanilla extract. (Alternatively, if that’s easier, you can also mix all the ingredients in a mixing bowl instead of transferring to ramekins later, but I prefer less cleanup.)

- Add dry ingredients. Add cocoa powder, almond flour, besti and salt. Stir well. Add half of the chocolate chips to the mixture and smooth the tops.

- Cook. Microwave healthy brownies in cups (or ramekins) for 40-50 seconds, until the tops look slightly moist but not soggy. (You can also bake in a 350°F oven, but I didn’t test bake times, so check every few minutes.)
tip: Test with a toothpick. A toothpick inserted into a low-carb brownie should have a small amount of batter that you can roll between your fingers. It may collect a little oil on top, which will reabsorb into the brownie as it goes from hot to hot.
- Decorate. Sprinkle the remaining chocolate chips on top. (I recommend doing this while the brownies are still warm, so they’ll melt a bit!)

Variety
You can easily customize this healthy brownie in cups to suit your tastes! Try these ingredient variations:
Storage Instructions
- Shop: Cover leftovers at room temperature for up to 1 day, or in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
- Reheat: Enjoy cold, room temperature or microwave on low power until warm. Be careful not to overheat or the brownies will dry out.
- freeze: Wrap the cup brownies tightly with plastic wrap and freeze. Thaw in the refrigerator or room temperature before serving.
