North Gate by Jetwing: a comfortable stay in Jaffna

The 44 luxurious rooms at North Gate by Jetwing are the ideal base for your holiday to the northern capital of Sri Lanka.

Jaffna is the northernmost city in the country, with drought, palm trees and mild sea breezes. It is set in traditional Tamil culture with its famous temples and menopause as a backdrop. Nallur Kandaswamy is a huge Hindu temple with elaborate gopuram towers and golden arches. The 17th century Jaffna Fort on Portugal’s Star Coast showcases Dutch and British rule. The Jaffna Public Library is a symbol of the city’s post-war rebirth. Dutch cannons and pre-colonial remains can be found in the Jaffna Archaeological Museum.

Jaffna Jetwing

Jaffner It is currently being rebuilt from a 30-year civil war that lasted until 2009. To see Jaffna at its best, however, you must first find a suitable place to stay. North Gate by Jetwing is located in, a 14-minute walk from Jaffna Public Library and 0.6 mi (1 km) from Nallur Kovil. The hotel features a restaurant, free WiFi in all areas and free private parking for guests who drive. It is 1.8 km from Jaffna Fort, 14.5 km from Nilavale Well and 19.3 km from Keerimalai Naguleswaram Kovil.

Jetway North Gate

Jetwing’s North Gate appears to be a compact property on first impressions. It was pouring rain the day I arrived. Stayed at North Gate by Jetwing for three nights at the invitation of Sri Lanka Tourism Board. When I arrived late one night in October, I heard Vannakam and the staff insisted that I light up their traditional brass prayer lamps.

Jetwing Jaffna Welcome

The traditional greeting is followed by a welcome drink and check-in rules. I was asked to fill out a lengthy form detailing everything from my departure destination to my medical history, including my vaccinations. This is awesome. This shows that Jetwing cares about everyone’s health and safety.

North Gate Deluxe Room 3003

Built with sophisticated modern hospitality and family traditions, each room has its own balcony with views of the city and surrounding peninsula. I live in room 3003 on the third floor with a view of the swimming pool on one side and a nearby residence on the other. However, the other side of the building faces the Jaffna railway station.

Luxurious sheets and sheets on the queen bed were changed daily to ensure my stay was as comfortable as possible. All sheets are sanitized and high-temperature laundered. Additional amenities include ample charging ports, telephone with IDD, bottled water, hairdryer, bathrobes, slippers, iron and ironing board, umbrella, sewing kit and baby cot (on request).

North Station Restaurant

Jetwing Jaffna’s in-house restaurant, Northern Station, serves authentic northern cuisine. At North Station, I tasted hot Jaffna food, as well as medium spicy continental and Asian food. North Gate by Jetwing hosted a special Jaffna dinner on the last day of my stay; they served me their signature dishes there. Drawing on their own peninsular heritage and inspiration from South India, their chefs offer a range of northern delicacies in their purpose-built show kitchens. I tasted everything from the spices of the local crab curry to the specialty shellfish broth called Odiyal Kool.

Jetwing Jaffna North Station

For breakfast, I savoured a variety of continental delights to indulge my taste buds. The North Station can accommodate up to 100 people at any one time. Breakfast is served from 7:00 am to 10:30 am, lunch from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm, and dinner from 7:00 pm to 10:30 pm.

bar

In Jaffna, drinks at the Northern Gateway are a must. Every day, I relax with a beer (just 88 rupees or $1.25) at The Bar on the first two days and palmyrah arrack on the third. Taking a sip of their drink is like ending a long journey. I sip a cold beer by the pool in the evenings admiring the northern skyline.

Northgate Jetwing Bar

The bar at Jetwing North Gate stocks fine wines, foreign spirits and a variety of unusual drinks inspired by Jaffna’s vibrant culture. Indoor seating is limited to 20 people, but the bar is open from 11am to 10.30pm. North Gate by Jetwing also supports your active lifestyle with a swimming pool and a small modern gym for those who prefer to relax in the water.

Northgate Jetwing Veidehi Gite

I am required to wear a mask in all public places. I’m relieved that all Jet Wing staff are wearing masks in all public spaces. Frequently touched surfaces are cleaned regularly and disinfectants are available to everyone throughout the facility. Standing above other hotels in Jaffna, Jetwing is home to Sri Lankan hospitality and will welcome you with the best of courtesy as you enter Sri Lanka’s unique northern peninsula.
