Let’s dive in!
lark
lark is a curated online store of baby shower gifts, established by new mothers May and Vi after the birth of their daughter. As friends and acquaintances had already asked the pair for baby shower gift ideas, they went the extra mile and opened their own online business to meet the demand. Let’s learn more about their stories.
1. Describe your business idea/model in a few sentences:
Lark Roo designs practical, high-quality and unique gift sets for babies, moms and dads.
2. What motivated you to enter this market segment?
Pregnancy and preterm birth are a very precious time for new parents, as well as family and friends who support them. We wanted to create beautiful and functional gift sets with tried and true unique items that new parents will love and provide a seamless gift-giving experience for friends and family. As mothers ourselves, we often get questions from new parents about baby supplies, as well as baby shower gift ideas from family and friends. We realized there was a way to serve new parents and the communities that love them.
3. What factors or life events motivated you to become an online business owner?
As busy moms eager to make an impact, the flexibility of an online business is appealing, and platforms and tools like Ucraft allow us to create virtual storefronts and easily conduct business and connect with a wide audience that mortar shops don’t.
4. What challenges did you face when building your business? How did you overcome them?
As a small business, we’ve learned a lot from trial and error and continue to learn how to run a more efficient and impactful business. It helps us to keep an open mind, to be comfortable with the unknown, and to evolve as we learn from our mistakes. Finally, when working as an entrepreneur, you can sometimes feel isolated. Still, it’s important to remember that you are part of a wider community and that there are many others who have solved/are solving the same problems you are facing now. It’s a matter of proactively staying connected!
5. When designing your website, did you find the process easy or challenging? What is your source of inspiration (if any)?
We love the website design process and find it fun to imagine and relatively simple to execute. We tested several different platforms and found Ucraft easy to navigate and appreciated the responsiveness of customer service via chat. When you’re running an online business, your website is the first and lasting impression you make on your customers, so look, feel, content, and ease of use are critical to engaging with customers. To design our website, we put a lot of thought into our target customers and the interface, design and branding that appeals to them.
6. Do you have any advice you would like to share with aspiring entrepreneurs?
Don’t be afraid to use your network and community for support! Entrepreneurship can be a roller coaster, with ups and downs, but learning from your experience and the experience of others makes the journey fun and rewarding.
