More than 4 million people have fled the country since the war in Ukraine began. Earlier this month, Priti Patel announced the establishment of a visa application centre for Ukrainians trying to come to the UK en route to Calais. But the center never existed. A few days later, the interior ministry said it was actually in Lille, but did not reveal the exact location. Officials then claimed that refugees in Calais could receive free Eurostar tickets to the center — even though the Eurostar did not stop in Calais. A day later, the center moved from Lille to a small town 30 miles away.
Why is the government’s response so chaotic? What are the barriers for refugees to travel to the UK? As the anti-refugee bill passes Parliament, what does this mean for the way we treat refugees in the future?
