Google Ads custom columns provide the flexibility to expand reporting with more data points that your personal business cares about.
Google now gives you more options when creating custom columns. Let’s take a deeper look at the new changes.
New Google Ads Custom Columns Feature
The extension for custom columns now allows you to do the following:
- Include spreadsheet functions
- Calculate and compare metrics across date ranges
- Reference other custom columns in formulas
- Add more non-metric columns to the formula, including columns for campaign name, budget, etc.
- Take advantage of new column formats such as “Text”, “True/False” and “Date”
- Apply multiple filters to a formula
- Filter conversions by custom variable
Here is an example of how your custom column will appear at the overview level:

- arithmetic
- logic
- text
- date
Custom column availability
Google notes that custom columns you create will be available in other reporting tools. These include:
- report editor
- Dashboards in Google Ads
Being able to share custom columns with dashboards and reporting tools can help make your reports more complex and relevant to your target audience.
How to create custom columns
In Google Ads, click the “Columns” button above the campaign overview (or the ad group level, whichever level you want to create them at).

You need to enter a name for the custom column. You can also choose to create a description, up to 180 characters.
If you are building a complex indicator, it would be beneficial to include that information in the description.

With custom columns, you’re no longer limited to traditional Google Ads options.
Custom columns give you the freedom and flexibility to monitor and report on the metrics that make the most sense for your company.
Custom columns are also a great way to organize campaigns, ad groups, and keywords based on column input.
