Instagram changes ranking algorithm to favor original content

Instagram’s homepage dynamic ranking algorithm is receiving updates aimed at increasing the visibility of original content.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced that the ranking changes are part of a larger effort to reward originality and give due credit.

Mosseri said:

“It’s Instagram’s heartbeat for people to express themselves. That’s what makes Instagram work. I talked a lot this year about the importance of creators to the future of Instagram. One thing I’ve learned from talking to creators is that for their How important it is to them that their work earns accolades. So today, some hidden gems, some ways, we’re going to make sure the credit goes to those who deserve it.”

He went on to discuss three updates aimed at helping creators’ work:

  • Home Feed Ranking Changes
  • product label
  • Enhanced character tags

Here’s more information about each change that’s being rolled out.

Instagram Ranking Update

Without going into too many details, Mosseri said Instagram’s ranking algorithm will now give more value to original content.

This means that content someone creates and posts themselves may be more visible on Instagram than reposted content.

Mosseri explained:

“I know a lot of you are skeptical about rankings, but it really helps us make sure Instagram is more valuable to everyone who uses the platform. This [update] Special attention is paid to this ingenious idea.

If you create something from scratch, you deserve more credit than sharing what you found from other people. We will do more experimentation and value original content, especially compared to retweeted content. “

Brief details, this announcement immediately brings to mind several questions. One of them is: Does the content have to be original Instagram content?

It is common for creators to share the same content on multiple platforms

What if users republish content they originally created and shared on another site?

Will they still get a boost for publishing their own content even if it’s available elsewhere?

Or, since it can be seen outside of Instagram, will it be considered a repost?

It’s unclear if the intent here is really to reward creators for originality, or to encourage the creation of more Instagram-exclusive content.

Hopefully Instagram will share more information about this update in the future.

product label

The ability to tag products in Instagram posts was previously available to select users. Now, this feature is available to everyone.

Mosseri said:

“Product tags have been around for a while, but now everyone can use them. So wherever you are, you can tag a product and bring some traffic or attention to your favorite business or creator.”

You can tag products in Instagram posts by following these steps:

  • Start creating posts.
  • tap ‘tag person‘.
  • Start by searching for and tagging the brand.
  • There should be two options at the bottom, labeled “People” and “Products”.
  • tap ‘product‘.
  • Click on the photo to start tagging the product.
  • beat ‘share‘ Post the post.

This feature is designed to shout out your favorite brands and small businesses.

If someone buys the product marked in your post, there is no benefit, such as affiliate income.

Enhanced People Labels

Instagram’s existing people tagging feature is getting a small enhancement.

Individual users can now add categories to their profiles, which will appear when they are tagged in a photo or video.

This new category feature will allow people to see who you are and what you do if someone posts a video of you speaking at a meeting and tags you.

Mosseri said:

“So for a long time, you could tag accounts on Instagram and photos or videos, but now you can actually choose a category for yourself.

So if you go into your profile, edit your profile, when you’re tagged in a photo or video, that category will come up. Again, work hard to make sure you can have your presence, your identity, be who you want to be, and get credit flow appropriately. “

Finally, Mosseri reiterated that Instagram is committed to ensuring users receive proper credit.

“Again, creators are very important to the future of Instagram, and we want to make sure they are successful on the platform and receive all the credit they deserve. Hopefully these three changes are small steps in that direction.”
