The Vashon Art Center will begin exhibiting works by former Vashon Island resident and renowned ceramic artist Akio Takamori starting May 6.
Although not a retrospective, the exhibition curated by his wife Vicky will be an overview of Takamori’s work. The Japanese-American artist died of pancreatic cancer in 2017 at the age of 67.
On display and for sale will be prints made throughout his career; ceramics courtesy of his Seattle gallery James Harris; and works from Vicky’s private collection related to his Vashon period.
Takamori grew up on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu. The influence of his art can be traced back to post-World War II Japan and a childhood home full of aunts and uncles, as well as nurses at his father’s medical clinic, which was attached to the house.
