On Sunday, at a popular tourist attraction in Jaipur, India, a lightning strike killed at least 11 people and injured nearly 12 others.
according to BBC NewsWhen the lightning struck, the victim was taking a selfie in the rain on top of a watchtower in the 12th-century Amer Fort.
“There was a tower there. When the lightning struck, the tower wall collapsed and many people were buried under the tower. Because the fortress was on the mountain, when the debris fell and the space shrank, some people also fell into the ditch.” Senior Disaster Management in Jaipur Official Shankar Lal Saini told CNN.
Saini continued to tell the news media that the incident took place at around 6:30 pm local time, and the rescue operations handled by the police and civil defense officers continued until 7 am on Monday morning.
According to BBC News, there were 27 people on the watchtower and fortress wall when the lightning strike occurred. Some people jumped to the ground during the strike.
A legal official told the local media that most of the victims were young people.
A total of 11 bodies were found, including women and children. CNN said they were pronounced dead when they arrived at Sawai Man Singh Hospital in the city, and 11 others were in stable condition in the hospital.
This is not the only place in the area where people were struck to death by lightning. BBC News reported that there were dozens of victims in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh in India. According to reports, on Sunday alone, Rajasthan, where Jaipur is located, reported more deaths. Local media reports.
According to data from the National Criminal Records Bureau of India, lightning strikes caused 2,885 deaths in 2017 and 2,358 deaths in 2018.
