The Philippine government has awarded a consortium backed by South Korean and European companies and led by Samsung Group’s construction arm to develop the Sangley Point International Airport (SPIA) in Cavite, south of Metro Manila, for $11 billion
The new airport is expected to help ease congestion at the overstretched Ninoy Aquino International Airport in the capital region.
Samsung C&T will lead the newly established SPIA Development Consortium with Philippine company Cavitex Holdings and House of Investments of Yuchengco Group of Companies.
Other members of the group include Philippine airport solutions provider MacroAsia, Munich Airport International and Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong, a subsidiary of British engineering and construction company Arup Group.
“huge challenge”
“The challenges are great, but the SPIA Development Alliance is well-positioned for the job at hand,” the alliance said in a joint statement.
A preliminary development agreement co-led by state-owned China Communications Construction Company and Hongya was supposed to go ahead, but the companies failed to comply with the package of the Sangley project until February 2020.
80 million passengers per year
Thornley Airport was envisioned as a two-runway airport with a capacity of 80 million passengers per year. The site can be expanded to four runways.
The development is expected to create 50,000 jobs and also includes construction of road and rail links to help ease congestion at Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
Samsung C&T has a lot of achievements. It was responsible for the construction of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the tallest building in the world, as well as the Incheon International Airport in South Korea, the new Ulaanbaatar International Airport in Mongolia and the ongoing expansion project of Taoyuan International Airport in Taiwan. The company has over 40 years of construction and engineering experience.
