Ingredients and Substitutes
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for Creamy Garlic Tuscan Chicken, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see Recipe card below.
- olive oil – For best flavor, use extra virgin olive oil, but if you have avocado oil, you can.
- garlic – Fresh garlic tastes best, but canned minced garlic will also work.
- heavy cream – Most other types of milk won’t have the same creamy flavor and texture, so avoid regular milk, almond milk, or coconut milk beverages as substitutes. However, full-fat coconut milk or coconut milk will also work.
- chicken soup – I use the low sodium variety because the accompanying cheese is rather salty.you can also use Homemade Bone Broth.
- grated parmesan cheese – Grated varieties are easier to incorporate into sauces.
- chicken breast – I used boneless skinless chicken breasts, but you can also use boneless chicken thighs.
- sun dried tomatoes – I do it myself Oven dried tomatoesbut store-bought varieties are also available.
- spinach – Fresh spinach is best for this Crock Pot Tuscan Chicken.
- seasoning – including store-bought or Homemade Italian Seasoning, Sea Salt and Black Pepper. You can also add crushed red pepper flakes if you like extra heat.

Tips for the Best Tuscan Chicken
When you’re making Tuscan chicken in the Crock Pot, here are my top tips to make sure your chicken is perfect every time:
- Put more sauce directly on the chicken. You want a little more on the chicken and less on the bottom of the crock. That way, you’ll end up with more of the sauce sticking to the chicken and the meat more juicy. Also, the part on top of the chicken is thicker.
- Wait until the end to add the spinach. It will wither very quickly! Just don’t let it slow cook all the time with the Creamy Tuscan Garlic Chicken as it will turn mushy. Spinach should only be added at the end.
- Stack the toppings high. When you’re ready to serve, don’t forget to place the toppings at the bottom of the crock pot on the Tuscan Garlic Chicken on a plate.
- Don’t forget the sauce at the bottom of the slow cooker. Drizzle the sauce over the chicken for extra juiciness when serving.
How to Make Tuscan Chicken in a Skillet
Don’t have a crock pot? no problem! You can easily adjust the recipe by placing it in a saucepan – so the sauce thickens, if you like:
- season. Pat the chicken breast dry with paper towels. Season with Italian seasoning, salt and pepper.
- searing. Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and roast for 4-8 minutes per side, not moving too much, until golden brown and almost cooked. Transfer to a plate, cover and keep warm.
- Make the sauce. Reduce the heat to medium and follow the directions for the Creamy Tuscan Sauce for the Crock Pot version above. (You can use the same frying pan.)
- Add sun-dried tomatoes and spinach. Cook for a few minutes until the spinach is wilted.
- Return the chicken to the pot. Heat for a few minutes until hot and cooked through.
Storage Instructions
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. You can also make the sauce ahead of time, store in the refrigerator, then heat and thin as needed and pour over the chicken.
