when Jesse ScobergCo-founder Post Blogshared with CNBC his thoughts on the huge benefits of living in Bangkok as part of their “Make It” series, which he had no idea it was going to spread in Thailand and abroad.
The article titled “My life in Thailand is better than my life in the US – that’s what it costs” received a lot of praise, but also more negatives from some members of the backpacker and expat retiree community Comment. They criticized how much Jesse chose to spend on lodging, food and travel in a place often seen as a mecca for cheap living.
“A lot of people will say, ‘Oh, $8,000 a month, you can live anywhere … no, you can’t live anywhere like we live in New York, which is an equivalent city, $8,000 a month. Our most recent NYC Back then, the apartment we lived in was a small studio for $4,200 or $4,400 a month. That’s a far cry from the type of service or quality we get in Bangkok at a lower price.”
On today’s show, Dan and Ian talk with Jesse about his initial decision to join the series, the varying reactions to him from Thai audiences, and some possible reasons for the “spending shaming”.
Listen and learn:
- Why Jesse’s is Seeking More Media Exposure for the DropIn Blog
- ‘Signals’ involved in ‘spending shaming’
- Responses to this piece in Thailand
- Thoughts on other locations offering experiences close to Bangkok
