We love everything about the holidays! Everything from music to decorations to gifts under the tree. Like it or not, the holidays are here. With Thanksgiving just a few days away, we’re busy with the holidays and looking forward to great food, time with family and friends, and all the festivities that come with it.

The holidays are a great time to relax, unwind and take a break from work, social media and other distractions. It provides opportunities to spend quality time with loved ones and connect in ways that you don’t always have the opportunity to.

With cooler temperatures outside, we’re often spending more time indoors during the holidays and are always looking for something fun to do. There are a lot of great games out there, and it’s the perfect respite from the screen (and awkward personal conversations). So this holiday season, light your fire, light some candles, cuddle up with your favorite seasonal throw blanket, and play a game with the family.

It offers a quiet, peaceful getaway if you need a break with the family and the family has a shared goal of getting it done before the holiday is over. Every Thanksgiving, my family takes part in a “triathlon” as a way to bring some healthy competition and exercise into our time. We would incorporate running, biking, wood chopping, and other activities that we found fun and relevant that year. You can create your own holiday triathlon with your family and cater to your family’s hobbies and interests. Maybe you entered a baking contest or a gingerbread house contest. So everyone can have fun!

Freeze Dance is a fun and simple game that the little ones in your family will love. Play some holiday tunes to get everyone excited. Someone needs to be in charge of the music and pause every so often. When the music pauses, participants must maintain any dance positions they find themselves in. Telephone

Another game I often play with my students during morning meetings – Phone is a super easy, fun game to play with kids. Use Christmas phrases to make it festively themed. Sit in a circle and have one person choose a phrase to whisper to the person to their left. That person then whispers what they heard to the person to their left and so on. When it finally reaches the last person in the circle, they say out loud what they heard. It’s always fun to hear how phrases change and the kids love it!

hurdles

hurdles is another great game for little ones, but grown-ups will love it just as much. Each wears a headband with a card that identifies them. Because the card is over your head, you can’t see it and have to try to guess what it is. This is a game that will make everyone laugh and lighten the mood.

clue Always one of my favorite games. It’s a timeless classic that’s perfect for playing with family and friends during the holidays. My friends and I used to run the Clue Marathon for hours on end as kids and adults. It’s a fun mystery game that requires some strategy, but is still fun and simple.

Catan

Catan is one of our favorite games! You need at least 4 people to play, and this game is more for teens and adults than kids. Also, be aware that it may take several hours to finish playing, so make sure you have plenty of time to play. It’s a great game to play on lazy snowy days or nights spent indoors.

banana gram

Love word games? banana gram is one of my favorites! It involves using letter tiles to make a crossword puzzle as you race against your opponent to be the first to use all of your tiles to complete your puzzle. This is a great educational game!

apples to apples

me and my friends used to play apples to apples Laugh until we grow up crying. This is a very fun game that provides so much entertainment. This is a great game for young and old, as well as a large holiday crowd.

chess

Although this is only between two players chess is a very fun game, perfect for teaching older children. You can also host chess tournaments to get everyone involved.it will make great holiday gift also!

Backgammon

Backgammon is another two player game and one of the oldest known board games! A cozy table game to set up and play by the fire. This is a game of skill, strategy and luck.

monopoly

For children and adults 8 years and older, monopoly is another timeless classic. Both educational and fun, it gives kids a chance to play with money and other adult concepts.

taboo is another fun, kids love buzzers. Challenge yourself by trying to make your opponent guess your word without saying all the words you want to use!

i always love Mancala. It has an almost meditative feel to it, and is a great, accessible game for kids or grown-ups alike.

Fish Bowl is one of my favorite party games and my family has been playing it for years. It’s simple to play and always a hit.

How to play:

• To start, each player writes the names of 3 different people (must be famous or well known in the group) on small pieces of paper.
• Fold each sheet and place in a “fish bowl” or any bowl.
• Divide the group into two groups. There are three rounds.
• Round 1: One player from Team 1 picks a piece of paper from the bowl at a time and can use any word (except the word on the paper) to try to get the other team to guess the exact name on the paper. Team 1 has 1 minute to pass as many names as possible. For example, if the name is “Britney Spears,” they can say, “This is the singer who sang ‘Oops I Did It Again'” and if their team guesses wrong, they put the name back in the bowl. When Team 1 finishes, Team 2 continues with the name that still remains in the bowl. This continues until all names are gone. Keep track of how many names each group guessed correctly. Each player takes a turn to guess and give a hint.
• Round 2: The same name is put back into the tank. In this round, team 2 starts first, and can only use one word to imply the name on the paper. For example, for “Britney Spears,” they might say “Oops” if an earlier cue was used. They continue again until one minute is up or someone guesses wrong and swap teams until all papers have been guessed. Points are counted, names are returned to the bowl and the final round continues.
• Round 3: Team 1 starts, but this time only uses motion (no sound, noise or words) to keep their team guessing. Again, they only have one minute, and any incorrect guesses end early. They continue switching between team 1 and team 2 until all files are exhausted. Count the points again and determine the winner!
