English Phrases: What are you doing? (what are you going to do?)


You may have learned the extremely common greeting Are you OK? (“How are you?”) in Italian, but what if you want to ask what someone is doing? In this case you can use the following expression:

what are you doing…? Mutations what are you doing…? and the more formal What do you do…? Depending on the context, can mean one of two things:

  • What do you do (usually, in general)
  • what are you doing? (at this particular moment)

This is because Italians often use the present tense where English speakers use the present continuous (-ing).
