This is Bhil and Gond art from Madhya Pradesh. Several tribal artists are painting the tribute wall stroke by stroke with meticulous detail from eight states. I talk to artists and patrons to learn more about the art form and its origins and progressive expansion. As an art connoisseur, I’m always on the lookout for fascinating genres of art to admire.

Despite their uniquely modern style, it’s refreshing to hear them articulate their commitment to tradition. For example, Mr. Dhurve, a Gund artist living in Madhya Pradesh, proudly shared with me his work, which mainly focuses on depicting flora and fauna. Another Gund artist, Venkat Shyam, presents his work through modern Hindu gods. Although it was a departure from traditional Gond art, he managed to do so while maintaining a reverence for the community’s religious beliefs.
He also emphasized how important it was to him to show respect for the ancestors who developed this art and believe that it should be passed down from generation to generation. It was these conversations that really opened my eyes to the beauty of Bill and Gund’s art and what it stands for – preserving a legacy that will last forever. Although these paintings have only recently gained global acclaim, the artists and patrons I spoke to were very proud of the art form and its origins. They agreed that it was important to keep the tradition alive and share the stories behind the paintings with new audiences.
