It’s a rich and flavorful soup that can be eaten as it is or topped with toasted bread and gooey golden cheese. I mean, what could sound more comfortable than that?

Another benefit? It’s so easy to whip up. Just put a few basic ingredients into the crockpot and let it work its magic. This recipe makes a lot, and while it’s slow to cook, it takes very little prep time. All it takes is 15 minutes of hands-on time.

What’s the difference between onion soup and French onion soup?

While the two are similar, there are some subtle differences.

First, French onion soup tends to use a combination of yellow and red onions to create a specific flavor profile. English onion soup uses a wider variety of onions, including shallots and leeks.

Second, the broth. French onion soup is always made with beef stock. English Onion Soup, on the other hand, can be made with any type of broth.

Finally, the toppings! Both types of onion soup are traditionally topped with bread and cheese. However, French onion soup is often served with cheeses like Gruyere and mozzarella. English onion soup is traditionally served with cheddar cheese.

How to Make Crockpot French Onion Soup

This really is the best French onion soup ever. This hearty recipe takes a quick 15 minutes to prepare, then it’s hands-free!

  1. Cook the onions: Add the butter and oil to the bottom of the slow cooker, then add the onion, coconut sugar, garlic, vinegar, thyme, bay leaf, and half the salt and pepper. Cover and cook on low heat for 6 hours.
  2. Add broth: Next, add the beef broth, fish sauce, arrowroot powder, and remaining salt and pepper. Cover and cook for another 2 hours.
  3. bake: You are almost there! Once the soup is done simmering, you can serve it exactly as is. But if you want to serve it more traditionally, divide it into oven-safe bowls and top each with a slice of toast. Sprinkle with cheese, then bake at 350ºF for 20-30 minutes. Broil on high for a final 1 minute to brown the cheese.
  4. Cool and serve: Just keep in mind that the bowls will be hot when you take them out of the oven. Let them cool for a few minutes before adding them to the soup.
