Can the Scandinavian Sleep Method Help You Get a Good Night’s Sleep?

A few years ago, I went to Finland on a business trip. The experience was incredible, we did everything from meeting the reindeer to jumping into the freezing water after finishing a traditional Finnish sauna. We also checked in Arctic Tree House Hotel, the room has something unique about it. In addition to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows in the room, the bed is also Scandinavian.

At the time I thought it was great. A king size bed with two single comforters and no sheets, genius. As much as I love it, I haven’t changed anything since I got home until recently. I’m tired of tossing and turning in bed (as is Craig). As sleep-deprived parents, we need quality rest. So I decided to try the Scandinavian sleep method. I’m sharing how the Scandinavian sleep method works and whether it can help you get a good night’s sleep.

What is the Scandinavian Sleep Method?

Although I discovered the Scandinavian sleep method in Finland, it is said to have originated in Scandinavian countries such as Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The concept is actually quite simple. Buddies sleep in the same bed instead of sharing blankets and curling up on sheets, but each gets their own comforter and uses only one sheet (no top sheet).

How does the Scandinavian sleep method work?

Have you ever wrestled over a blanket in bed with your partner? Is the top sheet pushed to the end of the bed and caught between the comforters? Does one of you sleep cold and the other sleep hot? The Scandinavian sleep method can help with all of the above. I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t want to give up my top sheet (this is a hotly debated issue in the US), but in many European and Scandinavian countries, top (flat) sheets aren’t an issue at all.

The first step in using the Scandinavian approach to sleep is to ditch the top sheet and don’t knock it until you try it. The second step is to use two quilts so each person has their own blanket. We have a king bed so we use two single comforters and a top sheet. It’s amazing how much you can customize bedding make a ideal sleeping environment For you and your partner. For example, if one of you is hotter than the other, You can just use a heavier or lighter quilt。 To tie the bed together and give it a cohesive look, you can add a blanket or other comforter on top.

Practical tips for trying the Scandinavian sleep method

Start with the right sheets

You don’t need sheets to use the Scandinavian sleep method, so you can skip that part and just make your bed with sheets. Honestly, it’s really nice not to use the top layer (I never thought I’d say this).

use two quilts

With a comforter on each side, you can even customize the weight based on your personal sleeping habits. I get cold easily and Craig is always hot. We have a king bed so we each use a twin comforter that we fold in half lengthwise when we make the bed.

Add quilts and pillows

To bring the look of your bed together and give it a cohesive feel, you can add a blanket, quilt or throw at the foot of the bed. You can even buy a blanket in the same color as the fitted sheet and tie them together.

Pros and Cons of the Scandinavian Sleep Method

Some of the clear advantages of the Scandinavian sleep method are better temperature regulation at night and fewer sleep disturbances. If your partner tosses and turns, steals blankets or sheets, it can wake you up and make it harder to get a good night’s sleep. If one of you sleeps hot and the other sleeps cold, it can be difficult to get the right temperature for sleep. With two separate comforters, you get just the right weight of bedding for an optimal sleeping temperature.

One of the downsides of this sleeping method is that it’s not conducive to cuddling. If you like to snuggle with your partner, two separate blankets can make this tricky, but you can easily overlap them and let those cuddles in before dozing off.

Another potential downside is making the bed, it might take slightly longer to make the bed with two comforters, but I honestly didn’t notice a difference, and without the sheets, the time is essentially the same.

At the end of the day, sleep is very important to our mental, emotional and physical health. After a good night’s sleep, I feel like a completely different person. The Scandinavian Sleep Method Is an Effective Way (Among Others) to Get Better Sleep healthy sleep habits). If you and your partner are fighting over the comforter, getting too hot or cold, or getting tangled up in the sheets, consider giving it a try. Combining twin comforters, a king or queen bed, and a fitted sheet, the Scandinavian Sleep Method is a great way to help you sleep better and get a good night’s sleep. It works for us and I can’t imagine going back to the old way!
