Seattle is a large city with plenty of attractions well worth spending a day in. But, for whatever reason, if a day in Seattle is all you have, then you can make the most of it!
You can only skim the surface of this fascinating city, so don’t try to cram too much, but plan wisely so you can cover as much ground as possible.
Plan your Seattle itinerary in advance, picking the highlights of any museum you want to visit.

One of the best things about Seattle is that there is so much free stuff to see. You can easily roam around and stick to a very tight budget.
However, there are definitely one or two things that are worth your money, and if you only have one day in Seattle, you should do it the best you can.
The main attractions are listed here so you can choose exactly what you want to do and start putting together your Seattle day trip itinerary.
Pike Place Market
It opens early, so act fast and explore Seattle’s biggest attraction before the crowds.
The first ever Starbucks opened here, so grab a coffee if that’s your thing, or check out the produce, flower vendors and bakery.
The handicraft stalls open around 10am, so if you’re still around, shop for unique gifts or look for specialty shops further down the market.
If you’re not just visiting Seattle for a day, you can also visit in the evening when many of the stalls are closed and some of Seattle’s best restaurants are open.
Space Needle
Ask anyone to name one building in Seattle and it must be Space Needle. It’s almost a crime to come to Seattle and not see it, so make sure to include it in your day trip itinerary.
Built for the World’s Fair in 1962, the Space Needle was supposed to represent the space age of the 21st century.
We may not be quite there yet, but we do have this 605-foot tower that gives us 360-degree views of Seattle and the surrounding area.
If you want to go to the top, it’s a good idea to check ahead of time if the lookout is open on the day you visit – it’s undergoing extensive refurbishment and may be closed.

Budget Tips: If you’re counting money or have a fear of heights, you’ll still find it fun to take a walk outside. You can also enjoy great views from Kerry Park and the Seattle Great Wheel.

Stroll along the waterfront, where you can stop for lunch (locally caught seafood is recommended), shop for souvenirs, or just watch the world go by in Seattle for a day.
It can be a bit touristy and overdone, but on a clear day the views of the Olympic Mountains are stunning.
Stop by the Olympic Sculpture Park, or take a ride on the Ferris Wheel. It might not be as tall as the Space Needle, but you’ll still get stunning views of the city and beyond.
If you have time in the area, a quick ride in a water taxi will give you another perspective on Seattle. You might even spot some dolphins, so keep your eyes peeled!

Art is everywhere in Seattle, much of it freely available in the form of public sculpture.
If you’re a culture buff and wondering what to do in Seattle, you should definitely try and catch one of the major galleries, such as Seattle Art Museum.
Some museums and galleries offer free admission once a month, usually on the first Thursday of each month.
However, many of Seattle’s cultural attractions are world-renowned, so it’s worth the money if you’re here outside of your free day.
Museum of Pop Culture
This is one of the best museums I’ve been to and I highly recommend it on your list of things not to miss in Seattle.
When I went there, it was called Experience Music Project Pavilion, now it is Museum of Pop Culture.
I saw exhibits that delved into Seattle’s music past and present, including ones on Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix, and Pearl Jam, and I loved it!
It has now expanded to include other areas of contemporary popular culture. It’s not cheap, but I would 100% go back there again. I never say that about museums…
Seattle Public Library
You don’t have to be a nerd to take a quiet stroll through the central branch of a public library.
The 2004 building is a far cry from the dreary old libraries of the past, with an unusual layout that flows from floor to floor and is covered in glass the size of five football fields.
There are plenty of free events, so check the schedule to see what’s on offer.
Museum of Flight
My brother and my dad have been here and they really love it.
this Museum of Flight The Seattle-based museum houses one of the largest collections of aerospace vehicles in the United States. It’s a 15-acre space that includes the original Boeing aircraft factory and NASA space shuttle trainers!
Visit One of Seattle’s Stranger Spots
The city has some pretty, er, different attractions, and it would be nice to try to incorporate at least one of them into your day in Seattle.
Take a few selfies with the Fremont Street Troll under the Aurora Bridge, or really gross, there’s always the Seattle Gum Wall (yes, really).
You can also participate underground tour Seattle takes you past the sidewalks and storefronts built when the city was rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1889.
All of this should keep your day in Seattle very busy!
If you have a longer stay then, of course, you can accommodate more, take your time and see it all. At least you know what not to miss!
All I know is that if I ever get the chance to visit Seattle again, I’m all for it!

Know Before You Go
Seattle is located in the northwestern United States. It’s actually a great detour if you’re going to Vancouver too!
We took the ferry from Vancouver Island to nearby Port Angeles (of Twilight fame), then drove to Seattle, then took the bus back to Vancouver.
there are many things to do in vancouverso you can plan a trip to both cities at the same time.
Keep in mind that if you’re traveling to Seattle from outside the US (and you’re not a US citizen) and you haven’t been in a while, you may have to complete an ESTA application to get a visa valid for two years.
If you want to explore other areas around Seattle, then I recommend heading to Vancouver Island, which is also part of Canada and accessible by direct ferry, or head south along the US Pacific Northwest, an area known for its rugged, beautiful beaches and delicious food.
