Looking for the best margarita recipes? From classic margaritas to fruity frozen margaritas, I’ve got you covered! Plus, the best tequila for margaritas and other important things to know.

What’s in a Margarita?
A classic margarita is usually made with tequila, triple sec (like Triple Sec or Cointreau), and fresh-squeezed lime juice. Of course, there are many variations, including other types of juice or adding ingredients like jalapeños, cucumbers, or berries.
What’s the best tequila shot for a margarita?
The best tequila to use in a margarita is the one you like to drink. In general, silver or white tequila is the best choice. It’s sweeter and smoother than a reposado, and since we’re adding so many other ingredients, there’s no need to splurge on a bottle of aged tequila.
While you definitely don’t need top-tier tequila to make these margarita recipes, I recommend avoiding cheap tequila. Adding cheap tequila to a margarita is like seeking a hangover! Plus, it doesn’t taste very good. If you don’t know which one to choose, patrons are always a good place to start.
Can you prepare margaritas for a crowd?
Margaritas are a great cocktail to serve at a party or with a general crowd because you can easily prepare a big batch of them! Most of the margarita recipes I’ll share below have specific instructions, but the general idea for preparing a margarita for a crowd is to combine all ingredients except ice in a pitcher and refrigerate until serve. (This is great for making ahead!)
Then pour your desired garnish into a glass with ice. Very simple!
How to Salt the Edge
Margaritas traditionally have a salty rim, but some fruity margaritas will have a sugar rim instead, while others may have a spicy tart rim.
Either way, it’s super easy to add salt (or sugar) to the rim of your margarita glass:
- Wet the edges. The easiest way is to rub a lime wedge along the edge, but if you opt for a sugar edge, you may want to dip it in simple syrup.
- Dip straight into the salt. Sprinkle kosher salt in a shallow dish and dip the glass straight down into it, then upside down. Avoid twisting it, as this will cause the salt to come off.
What to Serve with a Margarita
For whatever reason, I want to sip on Marg anytime. But for me, the best excuse to whip up a margarita or two is… Mexican food.
There’s really nothing better than relaxing with friends and munching on something question and chips, then sip on a classic margarita.
