from Enaf and Finkelstein (2023):
…while 12.5% of those under age 65 were uninsured at some point in time, twice as many (one in four) were uninsured at some point within 2 years. Also, with the introduction of the landmark ACA, the risk of losing coverage has changed little. The risk of loss of coverage is especially high for those who purchase health insurance through Medicaid or a private exchange; they have a 20 percent chance of losing coverage at some point within two years, compared with an 8.5 percent chance for those with employer-provided coverage. People who lose insurance can experience prolonged periods of being uninsured; about half remain uninsured after 6 months, and almost a quarter remain uninsured for the next 2 years.
Despite the passage of the Affordable Care Act, solid health insurance in the US is really only available to seniors, veterans, and people with steady jobs.
