Ingredients and Substitutes
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for homemade peanut butter, the role each ingredient plays in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.
- Creamy Peanut Butter – This forms the basis of the peanut butter recipe.I love this brand Because it’s smooth and creamy, the only ingredient is peanuts. You can also substitute almond butter if desired. If your nut butter contains sugar (which I don’t recommend 😉 ), you probably don’t want to add honey unless you like it too sweet.
- garlic -Crushed or ground garlic is best in this recipe so it evenly flavors the peanut butter recipe without overpowering it.if you use minced, making sure to chop very, very finely. You can also substitute 3/4 teaspoon of garlic powder.
- coconut aminos – this is my favourite soy sauce substitutebut you can use low-sodium soy sauce or soy sauce if it suits your lifestyle.
- Honey – Naturally sweetens the satay sauce. You can use regular or unsweetened honey.
- rice vinegar – Adds a tangy flavor. If you don’t have any, you can try substituting apple cider vinegar, white wine vinegar, or even lime juice.
- water – Thin the sauce.
- sea salt – This is optional and probably not required. It depends on whether your peanut butter has salt or not, and how salty your coconut aminos (or soy sauce) is. Adjust the salt to your own taste.
Variations: Add ginger or heat!
Add a teaspoon of grated ginger (or a pinch of ground ginger) for extra flavor, or to make it spicy, add a little Sriracha or sprinkle with crushed red pepper flakes.
