Ingredients and Substitutes
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for homemade apple slices, the role each ingredient plays in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.
- apple – You can use any variety you like! Some great apples are Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Fuji, Pink Lady, Gala, or my personal favorite, the Jazz apple. Make sure they are firm so they are easy to slice.
- sweetener – this is optional, not necessary if your apples are already sweet!Regular sugar works great, but I prefer the besta natural sweetener with no aftertaste, sugar or calories.
- Cinnamon – brings warm autumn flavors. See below for other seasoning ideas!
Variation: Adding lemon juice keeps it fresh longer.
It’s not necessary, but a squeeze of lemon juice on the slices before baking will reduce browning and your apple slices will last longer. I usually don’t add it because they go so fast!
How to Make Apple Chips
This section shows how to make baked apple slices, with step-by-step photos and details about the technique to help you visualize it.For full instructions, including amounts and temperatures, see recipe card below.
- piece. Remove the stems from the apples.use a sharp knife or mandolin Slice the apples into as thin slices as possible. (A mandolin works best if you have one!) Arrange apple slices in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Tip: If you have an oven safe rack, use it!
It’s not necessary, but the chips will be crispier (and finish a little quicker) if you bake them on a rack mounted on a baking sheet.i have and love this set!
- season. In a small bowl, stir together sweetener (if desired) and cinnamon. Sprinkle the cinnamon mixture over the sides of the apples (or just the cinnamon).
- bake. Bake the apple slices in the oven, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and dry. Cool completely for extra crispiness.

Variation: Use an air fryer or dehydrator!
- For the Air Fryer Apple Slices: Place in a single layer in a basket and air fry at 320°F for 8-12 minutes, flipping halfway through. (You’ll need to cook them in batches.) Just like the oven version, cool completely until crisp.
- For the dehydrated apple slices: Place on a rack in a single layer and dehydrate for 6-12 hours, until crisp.
Seasoning Variations
Cinnamon Apple Chips are a favorite flavor, but you can customize them with other fall spices:
- Citrus – add some dried lemon peel powder or dried orange peel powder. Fresh or coarser dry zest might work, but the texture won’t be as good.
- autumn spiced – In addition to cinnamon, you can also sprinkle a little nutmeg, cloves or cardamom.
- Apple Spice – Use apple pie spice instead of cinnamon.
- pumpkin spice – use Pumpkin Pie Spice instead of cinnamon.
Remember that apples will shrink when baked, so use less seasoning.
storage instructions
Store apple slices in an airtight container in the pantry for up to 1 week. They will soften after 24 hours, but you can make them crispy again! Return them to the 200°F oven to dry for 10 minutes, then let cool on the counter until crisp.

Ways to Use Apple Chips
The best way to eat apple slices is by themselves! But you can also reuse them for other recipes:
- breakfast – Crushed and sprinkled on top coconut yogurt or oatmeal.
- salad – break into small pieces and use them as a crunchy topping salad. They pair especially well with fall flavors Butternut Squash Salador substitute fresh apples winter salad.
- granola – add them to homemade granola even Granola Bars Gives a fruity flavor and extra crunch.
- Deli – use them in place of crackers on a plate with charcuterie and cheese for a fall-themed plate.
