Then, 2021-2023, from the EIA Coal Update (July 2023):
source: Now (July 2023).
Report from July.
…Total global coal demand is expected to remain around 8,388 metric tons in 2023 (+0.4%). Whether coal demand grows or falls in 2023 will depend on weather conditions and the economies of major coal-consuming countries.
After three very unique years, with the Covid-19-induced shock in 2020, a strong post-pandemic recovery in 2021, and the first real global energy crisis following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the market is back to being more identifiable in 2023 mode:
As a result, coal demand has increased relative to 2020 (the year of the pandemic) but will be flat in 2023, at least according to forecasts. The first number indicates that total coal consumption is on a downward trend. Furthermore, demand is expected to be flat in 2024.
