Tips and variations
Brussels sprouts with bacon can easily take on new life with a bit of Parmesan cheese or red pepper flakes, just make sure they're cooked just right.
- Check the color. Avoid Brussels sprouts with yellowing leaves. This means they start to age and lose their freshness, making your dishes bitter.
- Add cheese. Sprinkling the Brussels sprouts with Parmesan or Roquefort cheese gives the dish a slightly cheesier flavor.
- Make it fragrant. Adding 1-2 tablespoons of chopped garlic or shallots provides lots of natural flavor and creates a more complex flavor.
- Even the size. Choose Brussels sprouts that are about the same size so they can heat evenly in the pot, otherwise some will be undercooked and some will be overcooked.
- Use more vegetables. This side dish can be made even more hearty by adding sautéed mushrooms, green beans, carrots, and spinach.
- Add crunch. Top this dish with chopped pecans, almonds, or walnuts for a little nutty crunch in every bite.
- Make it spicy. Sprinkle with red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, or chili oil to taste.
