Scientists were surprised by the discovery of a 45 kg tropical fish on a beach in Oregon.
Photos of nearby Seaside Aquarium Show the huge opah, also known as moon fish.
According to the aquarium, the fish found at Sunset Beach by the sea was “rare on the Oregon coast”.
Tiffany Boothe, assistant manager of the aquarium, Tell the Washington Post This was the first opah she saw on the beach in the area.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) This fish lives deep in the ocean and “is found in tropical and temperate waters all over the world.” A more typical place is Hawaii.
NOAA research biologist Heidi Dewar told the Washington Post that the finding was surprising: “I don’t think Oregon usually has such large opals.”
The aquarium stated that the fish that was found dead will be frozen, and later this year “a lucky school group will have the opportunity to dissect this big fish.”
NOAA stated that little is known about opahs because they have not been extensively studied.
