What is mastitis and what are the symptoms?

Mastitis It is when the breast tissue becomes inflamed, sometimes due to infection. This makes the breasts soft or warm to the touch, swollen and wedge-shaped and red. A person may also have thickened breast tissue or lumps, feel pain or burning during breastfeeding, feel unwell, and have a fever of 101 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. These symptoms may appear suddenly.

This condition is usually caused by trapped breast milk, called lactation mastitis, and it can also be caused by blocked milk ducts or bacteria entering the breast. It is most common in breastfeeding women, but it can also occur in men and non-breastfeeding people.

Luyendyk Jr. did not elaborate on the suspected cause of Burnham’s mastitis.

Treatment includes antibiotics, such as those taken by Burnham, and pain relief.

If left untreated, this condition can cause pus to form in the breast, which may require surgical drainage. To avoid this, the Mayo Clinic recommends seeking medical attention immediately after symptoms appear.

According to the Mayo Clinic, mastitis can be prevented by visiting a lactation consultant to learn the correct breastfeeding techniques. Other tips include completely expelling milk from the breast during breastfeeding, allowing the baby to empty one breast before switching to another breast, changing the position between feedings, and ensuring that the baby is breastfeeding correctly. It is recommended that smokers try to quit smoking.
