General Motors (General Motors) Has recalled its 2017-2019 Chevrolet Bolt electric car This is the second time that “rare manufacturing defects” may cause electric vehicles to catch fire.
The recall was jointly issued by General Motors and battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution, affecting approximately 69,000 vehicles worldwide, of which nearly 51,000 are in the United States. NBC Finance Channel Report.
This is the second time that electric vehicles have been recalled due to fire risks. In the first recall issued in November 2020, GM urged Bolt owners to park their cars outdoors after at least two reports of car fires.
In this recall, General Motors stated that it will replace defective battery modules for Bolt owners free of charge. These are different from the initial recall, which relied on software upgrades and, in some cases, also required replacement of battery modules.
GM spokesperson Dan Flores told CNBC, “We are working with our suppliers and manufacturing teams to determine how best to speed up battery capacity for module replacement under the recall. These teams are working around the clock on this issue. Stop working.”
GM said it will notify customers when replacement parts are ready.
“As part of GM’s commitment to safety, experts from GM and LG have determined that the simultaneous presence of two rare manufacturing defects in the same battery is the root cause of some Chevrolet Bolt battery fires,” Flores said USA Today.
“As part of this recall, General Motors will replace defective battery modules in the recalled population. We will notify customers when replacement parts are ready,” he added.
Before preparing parts for Bolt owners, General Motors requires affected owners to use the Hilltop Reserve mode in the 2017 to 2018 models and the Target Charge Level mode in the 2019 models to set the vehicle to a 90% charge state limit.
The company stated that if Bolt owners are uncomfortable making these changes to their vehicles, they should seek help from a General Motors dealer.
This automobile manufacturer Bolt owners are also urged not to run out of battery power within a driving distance of about 70 miles or less, nor to park their electric cars indoors or charge them overnight unattended.
