A Las Vegas mother facing deportation raised more than US$230,000 from GoFundMe and requested US$2,000 after receiving no donations for a month.
Dasha Perltrece Kelly created GoFundMe for her and her three daughters on July 14. In the description of GoFundMe, she wrote that they only owe rent $1,900, excluding utilities. She said she could pay for utility bills by pawning items, but the weather was too hot to be homeless.
She wrote: “Before this pandemic hit, we had been in good condition. Now we are suffering.”
One month after GoFundMe was released, CNN Wrote an article about Kelly, prompting nearly 4,000 people to donate. She wrote in the GoFundMe update that she initiated this campaign out of despair and was honored to receive so much support.
She wrote that before launching the campaign, she tried “almost everything” to earn income while taking care of her family.
“Thank you for your great support and kind words,” she wrote. “We never expected such a reaction. This family is always happy.”
She said that her rent has been paid when the lease expires, she can renovate her house, and they have the ability to buy a car so that she can return to work. She also opened a bank account for each of her 5-, 6- and 8-year-old daughters. They will receive new clothes, shoes and some toys.
“I would never want these girls to struggle and be judged like me,” she wrote.
She also wrote that she would “pay forward” by donating part of the funds to charity and supporting another family in need.
“We are forever grateful,” she wrote.
CNN reported that when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the casino to close, Kelly lost his job as a card dealer. Since then, she has been in temporary work and has been donating plasma at a price of $100 to help her children get full.
“I just want to tell everyone that thank you very much,” she told CNN host Erin Burnett. “I really appreciate it. I am grateful to each of you.”
Weekly newspaper Kelly was contacted for further comments, but no response from the publication was received.
Donors expressed their support for Kelly in the comment section of GoFundMe, and many people said they were moved by her story.
“Your story on CNN is so inspiring! You did your best to continue the life of you and your beautiful daughters,” Rochelle Rice wrote. “It’s amazing to see this GoFundMe staff share their generosity, inspire you and help you thrive again!”
The federal deportation ban expired last Saturday, when it exceeded 15 million Americans default on rent.
