Just last Wednesday, it seemed that Americans would need to win 10 gold medals to get first place in the third consecutive Olympic Games, provided that the Chinese only won four gold medals. As of Thursday morning, the Chinese team had a 32-27 lead over the United States, and the Chinese team had won the expected gold medals in table tennis and diving competitions. They also won two other gold medals, making them 38 gold medals.
The U.S. team won gold medals in men’s and women’s basketball, women’s water polo, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s 4×400 track and field relay, and other first-place matches, allowing the Americans to win the gold medal again.
Now, the United States has won the most medals and the most gold medals in each of the past three Olympic Games (London 2012, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2020). China won the most gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, and the United States won the most medals in total.

The comparison and competition between China and the United States seems to be an eternal process. From the world’s most powerful country to trade wars and political confrontations, there are often more conflicts than resolutions between these two superpowers.
