Microsoft's Sata Nadella positioned the investment as a commitment to provide enterprise customers with the best choice of open and foundational models on Azure.
“We are paving the way for efficient and cost-effective AI models to accelerate growth and deliver real-world solutions,” Microsoft Azure release on X.
Mistral AI is a French artificial intelligence start-up company dedicated to developing advanced large language models (LLM) and artificial intelligence technology.
The key things Mistral AI does are:
Develop open source and efficient artificial intelligence models: Mistral AI has released several powerful artificial intelligence models. These models are designed to be fast, useful, and trustworthy, with capabilities in areas such as language understanding, code generation, and multi-language support.
Providing artificial intelligence services and APIs: Mistral AI provides artificial intelligence models through various cloud platforms and APIs, allowing developers and enterprises to integrate the technology into their own applications and workflows. This includes services such as Mistral Large, Mistral Small and Mistral Embedded.
Partners with major tech companies: Mistral AI has partnerships with companies such as Microsoft, which has invested $16 million to bring Mistral Large to the Azure cloud platform.
Focus on responsible artificial intelligence development: Mistral AI aims to develop “efficient, useful and trustworthy” artificial intelligence models through innovative methods. The company emphasized the importance of addressing potential misuse or poor performance of AI systems.
Microsoft invested in Mistral AI for several key reasons:
Diversify its AI product portfolio: By investing in Mistral, Microsoft is expanding its artificial intelligence offerings beyond its partnership with OpenAI. This helps Microsoft diversify its artificial intelligence product portfolio and reduce its reliance on a single provider.
Access Mistral's models: The partnership will enable Microsoft to offer Mistral's high-quality artificial intelligence models, including its ChatGPT-style assistant “Le Chat,” to customers through Microsoft's Azure cloud platform.
Leveraging Mistral’s technology: Microsoft will support Mistral through its Azure AI supercomputing infrastructure, allowing Mistral to train new AI models at scale.
R&D cooperation: The two companies will explore working together to train purpose-built AI models, including models targeting European public sector workloads.
Expansion in Europe: The investment allows Microsoft to strengthen its presence and partnerships in Europe's growing artificial intelligence industry, which could help it cope with increasing regulatory scrutiny in the European Union.

I guess if you bet on every player you can't lose! This surprised some experts, as many expected AWS to take this step.
Here’s what this move means for you…
Expanded AI model options: The partnership will enable Microsoft to offer Mistral's large-scale language models, including the ChatGPT-style assistant “Le Chat,” to its Azure cloud customers. This gives enterprises more options than just Microsoft's partnership with OpenAI.
Customized AI model: Microsoft and Mistral will work together to develop “specific-purpose models for specific customers, including European public sector workloads.” This allows enterprises to access AI models tailored to their specific needs.
Improve supervision positioning: Since Mistral is a European artificial intelligence company, the partnership may help Microsoft cope with the EU's increasing regulatory scrutiny of its artificial intelligence products and partnerships.
Reduce dependence on OpenAI: By diversifying its AI portfolio beyond OpenAI, Microsoft will be less dependent on OpenAI's continued success and dominance in the large language model (LLM) market.
Obtain Mistral's technology: Enterprises can leverage Mistral's artificial intelligence models and technologies through the Azure platform and benefit from the startup's R&D capabilities.
