AInsights: Your C-suite’s latest insights into generative artificial intelligence
Microsoft may be building one of its most prolific genAI portfolios to date. The company is a deep investor ($10 billion) in OpenAI. OpenAI not only provides support for ChatGPT, but also provides support for Microsoft's Copilot.Microsoft recently invested in French startup Mistral. The company has also just been fakely acquired Morphological inflection artificial intelligenceappointed co-founder Mustafa Suleyman as its CEO of consumer artificial intelligence.
In contrast, Apple, one of the most innovative companies in the world, has missed out on the genAI revolution. In fact, after exploring ChatGPT, Apple executives believed that Siri seemed outdated in comparison and needed to adopt an urgent merger or cooperation strategy to compete.
According to reports, Microsoft is now developing a new large-scale artificial intelligence language model called MAI-1 information. The effort was led by Suleiman. As a reminder, Microsoft acquired the intellectual property rights to Inflection for $650 million in March and hired most of its staff, including Suleyman.
MAI-1 is Microsoft's first large-scale internal artificial intelligence model, marking Microsoft's break away from its previous reliance on OpenAI models. With around 500 billion parameters, it is designed to compete with industry leaders such as OpenAI's GPT-4 (over 1 trillion parameters) and Meta's Llama 2 model (up to 70 billion parameters).
Part of the pressure may be due to its less than self-reliant position in the market. Previously, internal emails revealed concerns about Microsoft's lack of progress in artificial intelligence compared with competitors such as Google and OpenAI.
For executives, Microsoft's move underscores the strategic importance of investing in artificial intelligence and the need to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving field. It also highlights the value of acquiring top AI talent and leveraging strategic acquisitions to accelerate in-house AI development. As the AI arms race continues, senior executives must carefully navigate ethical and legal challenges while taking advantage of the opportunities presented by these transformative technologies.
These are lessons for all companies relying on artificial intelligence to accelerate business transformation and growth. If Apple and Microsoft were under pressure to innovate, imagine where your companies would be in their evolution.
