ingredients you need
This section explains how to choose the best toppings for filet mignon in the air fryer, the role of each ingredient in the recipe, and substitution options. See recipe card below for measurements.
- Fillet steak – I prefer grass-fed beef for the best flavor and nutrition, but any filet mignon cut will do. The main thing to know is that the thickness of the steak will affect the cooking time. Mine are 8 ounces each and are about 1.5 inches thick, so the cooking time is based on that. You can also use the same recipe for beef tenderloin, of which filet mignon is a part. However, since the tenderloin is larger, it may take an extra few minutes to cook.
- sea salt and black pepper – the only seasoning you really need! This steak is perfect and the simple seasoning is the best. For salt, a good rule of thumb is 1 teaspoon per pound of meat. If you use kosher salt instead of sea salt, you may need an extra 1/4 teaspoon per pound.
- Compound Butter – you don’t even have must Put compound butter on your air fryer filet mignon, but I highly recommend it! Made with butter, fresh herbs, garlic and salt in minutes. It imparts incredible flavor and restaurant feel to the steak.
Other seasoning ideas: You can keep it simple with salt and pepper, but you can also add your favorite steak seasoning (I like Montreal Steak Seasoning!), garlic powder, onion powder, paprika and/or red pepper flakes. Some people like to brush the steak with olive oil before air frying, but I don’t find it necessary.
How to Cook Filet Mignon in the Air Fryer
This section shows how to air fry a filet mignon, with step-by-step photos and details about the technique. See the recipe card below for full instructions.
- Bring steak to room temperature. About 30 minutes before cooking, remove the steak from the refrigerator and allow it to return to room temperature.
tip: You can skip this if you forget, but highly recommend it if you can. This ensures that the steak cooks evenly.
- Preheat. Preheat your air fryer (I like this Because it has a big basket! ) to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Preparation and season. Trim excess tissue or fat from the steak. Sprinkle generously with sea salt and black pepper on both sides.
- Air fryer. Place filet mignon in the air fryer basket so they don’t touch each other (cook in batches if necessary). Air fry to your desired doneness. (See below for cooking times.)
- rest. Put a tablespoon of compound butter on the steak (it will start to melt). Rest for 5 minutes, then slice against the grain. (If you prefer, you can cover with foil to keep warm while resting.)
How long does it take to cook a filet mignon in an air fryer?
Air fryer filet mignon cooking times will vary depending on the thickness of the steak and the air fryer temperature. I recommend cooking at 400 degrees F, for a 1.5-inch steak, use the schedule below to estimate the cooking time based on your preferred doneness.
desired degree of completion | cook to this internal temperature | cooking time in the air fryer |
---|---|---|
rare | 120 degrees Fahrenheit (52 degrees Celsius) | 10-12 minutes |
medium rare | 130 degrees Fahrenheit (54 degrees Celsius) | 11-13 minutes |
Moderate | 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius) | 12-14 minutes |
Nakai | 150 degrees Fahrenheit (66 degrees Celsius) | 13-15 minutes |
well done | 160 degrees Fahrenheit (71 degrees Celsius) | 14-16 minutes |
For perfect fillets every time, use Probe Thermometer, you can set it to your desired temperature, plug it in before cooking, and it will beep when your steak is ready. If not, you can also use ordinary instant read thermometer and check it.
The final temperature of the steak will rise another 5 degrees Fahrenheit while resting.
The secret to success
Follow these tips for juicy steak filet mignon in the air fryer – these tips actually work for any Steak, whatever you do.
- Bring to room temperature. Remove the steak 30 minutes before cooking to bring it to room temperature. This helps the steak cook evenly.
- Season generously. A good seasoning helps create the ideal crust.
- Do not overcook. use one meat thermometer to make sure you cook your steak to perfection.
- Let the steak rest. I know it’s tempting to cut the steak right away, but let it sit for 5 minutes so the juices have time to redistribute into the steak instead.
- Finish with butter. Filet mignon is a lean steak, so a bit of compound butter helps add rich flavor.
Storage Instructions
Filet mignon is a tender and expensive cut of meat that is best eaten as fresh as possible. However, if you need to store leftovers or frozen steak, do the following:
- Shop: Store leftover fillets in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
- Reheat: For best results, lightly heat the steak in a hot pan, or use the broth low temperature oven method I describe reverse grilled steak. Microwave ovens are not recommended.
- freeze: If possible, freeze filet mignon before air frying (or cooking in any other way). You can freeze cooked steaks for 3-4 months if desired, but they won’t be as tender when thawed and reheated, so they’re best used in soups or salad dressings.
What to Serve with Filet Mignon
Serve this filet mignon air fryer recipe with one of these classic steak noodles. My favorite is mashed cauliflower (you’ll be surprised how much it tastes like potatoes), or Roasted Broccoli and Cauliflower,As shown in FIG.
