“We’re starting with 5,000 regular taxis, and in a few months, we’ll have private drivers on board,” he noted.

Rapid growth of AirAsia Ride in Malaysia

Launched in Kuala Lumpur in August, the service nearly replicates the offerings of established ride-hailing companies such as Uber, Grab, Lyft, Gojek’s Didi, and is currently limited to cars. Meanwhile, it covers all major cities in Malaysia with 30,000 registered drivers and 700,000 rides to date, adding that total rides will increase by an average of 63% per month by 2021.

AirAsia Ride is part of Capital A, which was launched in January this year and is co-owned by AirAsia founder Tony Fernandes. After air travel nearly collapsed in early 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, he started focusing on expanding non-airlines.

Starting with cargo logistics and online travel bookings, the company’s offerings now also cover food, grocery and parcel delivery, restaurant bookings, insurance and micro-loans through the AirAsia Super app.
