LOS ANGELES (AP) — Fashion designer Alexander Wang was beloved by returning to the runway at his highly anticipated fashion show in Los Angeles after taking a break amid allegations of sexual assault.
Some chanted “This is awesome!” and “I love it!” Others cheered the 50-look collection for King’s “City of Fortune” fashion show in the historic Chinatown area on April 19.
Wang held his first show since 2019, just before several people accused him of sexual assault and drugging male and transgender models.
Wang initially denied the allegations – which were first made in late 2020 – calling them “baseless”. Last year, he said in a statement that he disagreed with some of the plaintiffs’ details, adding that he would “set a better example” as a public figure. A lawyer for the alleged victim later said Wang had met with the plaintiff, saying, “We acknowledge Mr. Wang’s apology and we are moving forward.”
The accusations tarnished Wang’s brand, but didn’t completely weaken it — especially in China. He’s still wearing popular figures like Rihanna and Julia Fox when posting a recent event with Lucy Liu. His brand is still sold in some major retailers.
The April 19 event was supported by 800 invitees who lined up to enter Wang’s performance, with red floodlights covering the central plaza area. It was a high-profile event, with stars such as Kimora Lee Simmons and Lisa Rinna sitting in the front row while others watched including rappers Gunna and Coi Leray, actor Harry Hamlin, K-pop singer CL and model Behtai Prinsloo-Levine 15 minutes of performance.
Wang was joined by models of various ethnic backgrounds and body types — including pregnant Adriana Lima, who received most of the applause for her belly button exposed on the runway. Models wore a variety of separates, including indigo and brown shades, denim and leather jackets, red velvet tracksuits, thick wool that shrunk into bike shorts, crop tops and oversized wool coats.
After the performance, Wang ran to the stage with a smile, waved at the audience dressed in black, and rushed backstage.
The show ended with plenty of red confetti sprinkled on everyone, creating a party vibe – especially for those attending an Asian night party, which featured local food vendors.
In the market, Wang always has cameras following him. He had many people shaking his hand, hugging and praising his work.
