Amwell CEO on MedCity Pivot Podcast: Sometimes ‘We’re Penalized for Business Models That Don’t Relate to Our Approach’

This is the best of times. It’s the worst of times for telehealth companies. During the pandemic, no single category has been so well-proven in its value in healthcare delivery that the digital transformation of healthcare has jumped from “nice to have” to “must have.” However, no other category saw a reversal of fortunes as it correlated with the stock prices of large public telehealth companies. Shares of Teladoc are trading off a cliff in the mid-$30s after hitting nearly $300 in early 2021. Amwell stock is currently trading at penny stock range.

In a wide-ranging interview on MedCity’s Pivot Podcast, Amwell Chairman and CEO Ido Schoenberg expressed frustration with being lumped in with other telehealth companies with different approaches and business models. Without a doubt, this is a slight dig at Teladoc. Overall, though he’s very bullish on the expectation that we’re on an “irreversible path,” telemedicine and virtual care will be integrated with the primary avenues of delivery for healthcare.
