NEW YORK (AP) — Former Democratic presidential candidate and New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Young is running in the New York congressional primary that pits two senior lawmakers against each other.
But Yang, known for his calls for the government to issue a universal basic income, isn’t backing U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler or U.S. Rep. Caroline Maloney in the Democratic primary in a hard-hitting district: a race in New York’s 12th district. In the Central District, he instead backed Democrat Suraj Patel, who worked on President Barack Obama’s presidential campaign and his White House.
A new redeployment map merges parts of Nadler’s Upper West Side with Maloney’s parts of Manhattan’s Upper East Side, pitting New York’s two longest-serving members of Congress against each other in the August primary.
Patel, who has unsuccessfully challenged Maloney in the past, said Nadler and Maloney were “career politicians” who were ineligible for any seats.
