Oakland, California (AP) – An armed robber in the San Francisco Bay Area whipped an Asian man with a pistol and an attempt to intervene in what the police described as a “shameless” attack in broad daylight.
On July 15, the man stood in a corner of Oakland’s Chinatown when two men approached and tried to take his belongings. The police said in a statement that one of the assailants was holding a gun with an extended magazine.
Since the coronavirus pandemic spread in the United States, there has been a wave of attacks against Asian Americans in the San Francisco Bay Area and across the country.
A surveillance video posted on Twitter by a KPIX-TV reporter showed that the victim was lying on the ground with a walking stick nearby, and a robber tried to take his watch. When he saw an armed man attempting to intervene, he shot a bystander wearing a bicycle helmet with a gun, causing him to fall.
The police did not immediately respond to information seeking details of the victim’s injuries.
Police said the two suspects entered the waiting vehicle driven by the third suspect and fled.
Oakland detectives are investigating and demand that anyone with knowledge of the attack contact them.
