Ingredients and Substitutions

- water chestnuts – You can use fresh chestnuts (available at some specialty or Asian markets) or canned water chestnuts (easier to find). I used canned, but if you find fresh, wash and peel it.
- bacon – Cut bacon strips in half to create shorter slices.
- coconut amino acids – This is my first choice soy sauce substitutes, but you can substitute low-sodium soy sauce or soy sauce. You can also replace half of this ingredient with Worcestershire sauce for an extra kick of umami.
- Maple sugar – You can use regular maple syrup, or try my natural maple syrup sugar free maple syrup Passed the genuine article in a blind taste test. 😉 Some water chestnut recipes use brown sugar, but maple syrup is a healthier option.
- garlic powder – Although optional, this adds even more flavor.

How to Make Bacon-Wrapped Water Chestnuts

- wrap. Wrap a piece of bacon around each water chestnut and secure with toothpicks. Repeat with all bacon slices.Place in Wire rack on baking sheet. (You can also bake them in a baking pan, but the bacon will be crispier when cooked on a rack.)
- bake. Cook in oven for 20 minutes.


- dip. In a small bowl, stir together coconut aminos, maple syrup, and garlic powder. Dip the bacon-wrapped water chestnuts into the sauce mixture, or you can brush them on all sides. Return to rack above baking sheet.
- Bake again. Continue baking until bacon is crispy.


Storage instructions
- Shop: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Meal Preparation: Assemble the chestnuts, secure with toothpicks, and refrigerate until ready to cook.
- Reheat: Bake at 350 degrees F for about 10-15 minutes, until heated through and bacon is crispy again.You can also reheat them air fryer for the clearest results.
- freeze: Place bacon-wrapped chestnuts in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet and freeze until solid. Transfer to an airtight container or zip-top bag and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 months.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (177 degrees C).

Wrap the bacon slices (each slice cut in half) around the water chestnuts and serve with toothpick. Place on a rack over a baking sheet (This is my favorite set).

In a small bowl, stir together coconut aminos, maple syrup, and garlic powder (if using). Dip bacon-wrapped water chestnuts into sauce, letting excess liquid drip off.

Bake extra 20-25 minutesuntil bacon is crispy.
